Wide receiver Stallworth pleads guilty, gets 30 days in jail

Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth began serving a 30-day jail sentence Tuesday for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida, a punishment made possible by his cooperation with investigators and the fervent wish by the victim’s family to put the matter behind them. Stallworth, 28, also reached a confidential financial settlement with the family of 59-year-old Mario Reyes, a construction worker struck and killed early on March 14 by Stallworth, driving drunk in his black 2005 Bentley.

Freeman could start for Bucs as a rookie

Cleveland Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth was indefinitely suspended without pay by the NFL on Thursday for driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in Miami. “While the criminal justice system has determined the legal consequences of this incident,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in a letter to Stallworth, “it is my responsibility as NFL commissioner to determine appropriate league discipline for your actions, which have caused irreparable harm to the victim and his family, your club, your fellow players and the NFL”

NFL news: La'Roi Glover retires after 13 seasons

La’Roi Glover, a six-time Pro Bowl selection at defensive tackle who once led the NFL in sacks, announced his retirement Monday after 13 seasons. Glover, who turns 35 on July 4, spent the last three seasons with St. Louis. He was not re-signed after the 2008 season, when he had 30 tackles and one-half sack. A Rams spokesman said the team had no comment.

Julius Peppers signs a one-year contract with Panthers

The five-month Julius Peppers saga is over for the Carolina Panthers — at least for this season. Peppers, the team’s franchised all-pro defensive tackle, signed an offer sheet Wednesday, locking him up with the Panthers at least one more season after saying in January he wanted to be elsewhere. The deal makes Peppers perhaps the highest-paid player in the NFL, with a one-year contract that could pay him up to $19.183 million this season.
